WEST ORANGE – Payne Tech continued its remarkable run in the 78th Essex County Tournament, securing its 13th straight victory with a dominant 55-43 win over second-seeded Arts in the ECT semifinals. Behind a standout performance from Jamir Westry, the third-seeded Titans punched their ticket to the program’s first-ever Essex County Tournament final, where they will face powerhouse Seton Hall Prep on Saturday at Essex County College.
Payne Tech (17-5) was once again led by Jamir Westry, who delivered a game-high 26 points, showcasing his ability to take over when it mattered most. The talented guard set the tone early, attacking the rim with confidence and knocking down key shots to keep the Titans in control.

A crucial factor in Payne Tech’s victory was the dominant inside presence of Gerald Edwell. The senior forward imposed his will on the glass, finishing with an impressive 13 points and 20 rebounds, providing second-chance opportunities and anchoring the Titans’ defense. His rebounding performance helped Payne Tech control the pace of the game, limiting Arts’ chances on offense.
After a closely contested first quarter, Payne Tech found its rhythm in the second, outscoring Arts 21-14 to take a commanding eight-point lead into halftime. Their defensive pressure forced turnovers, and they capitalized on fast-break opportunities to widen the gap. The Titans' ability to execute in transition proved to be a game-changer, allowing them to maintain control throughout the second half.
While Westry and Edwell carried the scoring load, Robert Foster also played a key role in the win, contributing nine points, four rebounds, and four assists. His ability to distribute the ball and create opportunities for his teammates was instrumental in keeping the offense fluid.

With the win, Payne Tech—a program in just its seventh season—has now earned its first-ever Essex County Tournament finals appearance. The Titans will have their toughest test yet when they take on top-seeded Seton Hall Prep in the championship game.
As Payne Tech prepares for its highly anticipated showdown with Seton Hall Prep, the Titans will look to maintain their winning momentum and defensive intensity to complete their fairy-tale run in the Essex County Tournament. With Westry leading the offense, Edwell controlling the boards, and a roster playing with confidence, Payne Tech has the potential to pull off another upset and make school history.
The Essex County Tournament final will take place on Saturday at Essex County College, where Payne Tech will attempt to cap off its breakout season with a championship.
